Is Playstation Home still attracting people?

Playstation Home

When Playstation Home was announced back at the 2007 GDC, it captured the attention of everyone at the show. While details were few, the promise of Home drove many people to pick up a PS3 in anticipation of the open beta. A couple years after their first look at Home, the door swung open and people finally got to see what they were waiting so long to experience. Many of the Playstation fans felt betrayed and disappointed when they found Home to be a cramped, glitchy, and mostly non-interactive virtual chat room. Sony pulled voice chat in public spaces and the servers were finally able to hold up, but that wasn’t enough to save Home. The lack of features caused many to disappear and the griefers caused what few nuggets of enjoyment could be gained from the service to become more of a chore. The gaming community wrote Playstation Home off as a failure and moved on.

As the months wore on, Playstation did not just foreclosure on their Home but kept working on releasing new content for the service. Slowly it began to trickle in with additions like the Uncharted Room and the Red Bull Air Race, Sony was finally bringing gamers the things that had promised way back in 2007. While the rooms offered brief entertainment, their entertainment dissapeared quickly. Time continued to pass and people continued to call for the closure of Home. It certainly wasn’t attracting the gamers to PS3 like Sony had hoped.

Only small trinkets like clothes and accessories were introduced into Home until one day the Warhawk Room was released. This brought the long awaited Sand Table that allows users to plan out their battles and use game launching to jump right into the battle with friends from Home. Finally the gaming community began to warm up to Home and see its potential. Sony didn’t let this attention go to waste and quickly released the Resident Evil 5 allowing players to explore the town from the game as if it was a movie studio. The signs gave people a better look into how the visuals were created and teased an upcoming scavenger hunt to happen inside the virtual space.

Playstation Home has come a long way from its release into open beta. The gaming community is still fairly wary of the service, but there are many gamers who are picking up their PS3s and heading “Home” to see if it will finally fulfill all the promises made. Sony is hope to keep their interest peaked with the promise of 2-3 spaces released each month and the release of the Hub, one of the most advanced spaced yet which acts as an alternate reality game that can only be accessed by those who can find the mysterious marking inside Home. This many improvements are attracting new gamers and even those who may have written off the service to come check out the Playstation Home.

Home Beta: Uncharted Access Codes

Uncharted

Update: These codes were originally found during early private beta using clues inside the Uncharted rooms. For anyone hoping to solve it the old fashioned way here is a hint to get you started. Listen to CB radio. Those aren’t just dots and dashes.

The Home Public beta went live today opening up the Uncharted: Sully Bar Room. The bar has a jungle setting with a small side room with a few chairs and tables set up. The main room includes a bar, three arcade machines, a jukebox, and several portraits of the Uncharted characters along with several “paintings” of specific scenes from the game.

On the first floor there is a door that leads to the “Smuggler’s Den.” To Access the door enter the code is 1024 then turn the dial to 1577383. Inside the Smuggler’s Den is a number of large chairs, tables, animal heads, painting, and artifacts. On the opposite wall to the fireplace is an Artifact Viewer “game” that lets you see close ups of all the artifacts from the game. (thanks commentators for tip)

Upstairs there is two doors that require keypads to enter the rooms on the other side.

The room on the left is the Film Room, which gives access to how the game was made including early art of Drake. The access code is 41675.

The room on the right is the Artifact Room, filled with painting of the island from Uncharted along with all the treasures that be received. The access code is 24312.
