How Star Trek Should Have Ended

You may have seen the new Star Trek movie which hoped to recon Captain Kirk’s entire life to make a decent movie.  They actually managed to pull it off, but the ending felt a little off though.  If Kirk flew into the blackhole, it would have saved us from a bizarre discussion between the two Spocks and set up an sequel where Kirk fights the Borg, and you know you would all be there to see that.  Once you are throwing out the old Star Trek history, you might as well make the new one as awesome as possible.

Left 4 Dead Movie

There is a fan made Left 4 Dead movie in the works.  The game has a large movie feel itself with movie posters for each campaign and an opening cutscene that left you wanting more.  I’m really excited about this and the production value looks really good.  Check out the trailer below and head over to their website to learn more about the movie and check out their campaign posters using the actors.

Float On: Wash gets a One-Shot Comic

Wash was always one of my favorite characters and when he died in the final act of Serenity, it felt like I just lost my best friend.  This won’t bring back my favorite starship captain, but  it may be as close as we get. Wash is getting a One-Shot Comic featuring old stories from his days before Firefly.  The comic will be titled Serenity: Float On and be published by Dark Horse on June 2nd.

Tron: Legacy Trailer

This trailer looks five kinds of epic.  It has just the right mixture of fanfare for the orginal Tron fans and modern awesomeness.  I also like that is a sequel instead of a shitty reboot.  The Karate Kid can definitely learn something from Tron.  Tron: Legacy comes out December 17th, 2010.

Movie Review: Lo

My subscription to Netflix has been proving itself more useful than I anticipated especially when I find gems like the movie Lo.  Here is how Netflix attempted to describe the movie:

Lovelorn Justin (Ward Roberts) sees his life change for the better when quirky April (Sarah Lassez) lands in the middle of it. When she’s abruptly kidnapped by a band of demons, Justin sets out to rescue her, with the help of the hellion Lo (Jeremiah Birkett), who has an agenda of his own.

It is incredibly off the mark.  You might expect some kind of hero making a trip to Hell not unlike Dante’s Inferno.  The movie actually takes place entirely in the dorky main character’s apartment.  He takes a book given to him by his old girlfriend and summons the demon Lo to retrieve her when she was captured and taken to hell.  The rest of the movie is spent with Lo playing tricks on Justin and trying to convince him that his girl isn’t worth saving. I won’t say too much because the movie has a lot of plot twists and it won’t take much to fill this with spoilers.  The movie focus mostly on character development and you get to feel a connection with every one of them, human and demon alike.  It has a lot of great dialogue and managed to add some great humor without making the demons any less scary.  The movie has a slow start and Justin is a little goofy at the beginning but the more you see the demon’s start messing with him, you becomes a lot more interesting.  It is really an excellent film and one that is definitely worth checking out.

Gamer: Sympathy for an Avatar

Warning: Spoilers

Gamer is finally out on DVD, so I decided to check out their portrayal of a futuristic gaming world where people play real humans in their games. It started in a game called Society that was basically Second Life where players took over the body of an “actor”.  The players of Society have no regard for the people they control and use them to do all the bizarre things that players of Second Life do: everything from bizarrely dancing to fulfilling sexual fantasies.  Then came Slayers, where players take control of death row inmates promised freedom if they can survive 30 rounds of the game, a near impossible feat.

The rules of Slayers are never fully explained.  It is only clear that there is a number of people being played by actual gamers who start at one location and once they reach a “save spot” on the other side of the battleground they win that round. It is assumed that more than one player is able to win the round since more than one person is shown to survive a round.  In a sense it can be considered a co-op game or even an MMO.  Besides the gamer controlled humans, there are people on the battleground that act as NPCs. They are shown to be there for decoration, in the same way pedestrians do in Grand Theft Auto.  While it is never clearly covered, it is assumed some of these NPCs take on the role of the enemy and act as the obstacle between the player controlled human and the save spot.

Despite the movie’s name, it does not focus on the gamer who controls on the Slayers. The star of the movie is Kable, the human controlled by Simon, who is just a few rounds short of earning his freedom.  You may be wondering why anyone would care  about Kable since it is Simon who’s skill has kept Kable alive.  It explained by the “ping”, the time it takes for Simon’s commands to reach Kable’s brain so he reacts.  During that brief time, Kable is in control and it is his own abilities that keep him alive.  It could be said both Kable and Simon are responsible for Kable’s success.

Kable being controlled by Simon

In the real world, Kable has a wife and daughter. His wife, Angie, works as an “actor” in Society.  We briefly see her try and win back custody of her daughter but that is contrasted from her time in Society. She is controlled by an overweight mostly naked boy who uses her to have sex with men inside the Society. The other people inside Society are  shown to be treated worse than Angie, with some “actors” being left bloody and hurt or used to fulfill sexual desires.  We see brief glimpses of  the players and their looks are shown to be more disturbing than what they use the actors for. People who would use an avatar to do such things are off to begin with, but since the avatars are actual humans, it is far worse.  The movie never explains what kind of money an “actor” of Society gets paid or if they receive some sort of compensation if they take damage during their “performance.” I assumed they must be paid an outragous amount to be willing to subject themselves to that kind of punishment.

angie Angie while she is “acting” in Society

Unfortunately, while the movie brought up some interesting ideas it fell apart about half way through with an unrealistic villain and absurd back-story, turning it into a shallow action movie (though the dancing scene was kinda cool). The most disappointing part was that Simon, the gamer, was hardly seen during the movie and barely had an effect on the events of the movie.

The first half of the movie did seem to have a subtle message of sympathy for  the avatars.  Kable and Angie are subjected to inhuman acts since the gamers don’t recognize them as human.  The wall between player and the game created by the TV screen distances them from the reality of their actions.  They get to do the worst things man is possible of without guilt. A gamer’s murder of another human is just written off as part of the game; even those able to momentarily realize they are human write it off as killing another psychopath who volunteered for it. Simon, Kable’s controller, even describes Kable as “his psychopath” at one point. The gamers are gods in that world.

Any gamer can think about a time they ran in to a deadly situation without concern because they knew they would just respawn or a time they tortured their Sim by not letting him use the bathroom or trapping them in a pool without the ladder.  We can get away with all of that because we know we are not controlling a person, it just a game.  Would gamers show concern for their character if they knew they were playing a real human? What if we could talk to our characters while we play them? I don’t think I could tell Nathan Hale from Resistance I was about to send him against aliens forces that would most likely kill him, even though I did a hundred times when playing it. If he only had one life, no continues, no resets I think I would play the games a lot differently. I can say even before I watched the movie, I made a point to not kill anyone who didn’t provoke me; this means no running over hookers in GTA or murdering random townsfolk in RPG’s.

You have to wonder when real gamers will feel guilt sending their characters to their death time after time. When the graphics get lifelike and our heroes so real, will we feel a tingle of guilt when the screen reads Game Over? Its a long way off, but the future of gaming might cause many gamers to ask themselves more philosophical questions about the value of the character’s life than asking how many lives their character has. For now, we are just gamers playing a game.

Movies Review

The Gamers: Dorkness Rising

The Gamers is about a role-playing group that can’t seem to win their campaign.  Enter Daphne, a girl who has never played an RPG before hoping that adding to their party number might solve their dying problem.  The movie switches between the events going on in the campaign and the interactions between the real life gamers.  What really helps the movie succeed is that they don’t take the game too seriously.  The players are constantly trying to work around the Dungeon Master’s story rules in order to succeed.  The campaign party is made up of a death prone bard, a mage who forgets what sex he is, an arrogant monk, a fighter with lots of intelligence and little hit points, and a pallidan sent to make sure they don’t  kill too many innocent civilians. While the actually campaign story is pretty dull, watching the character’s interactions makes the movie very epic.  Add a +10 for Pirates vs Ninjas reference and you have one really good flick. Rating: 4/5

The Movie Hero

The trailer does not do the movie justice, but quite frankly it is hard to make a trailer for this kind of movie.  What kind of movie is it or rather what movie it isn’t?  Let’s say you are sitting in a movie theater watching Indiana Jones save the day and get the girl. That’s nothing special, but what if Indiana Jones knew you were watching his adventure? What if he knew he was the star of a movie and everything that entails, he knows he is going to get the girl and save the day before his adventure even begins.  Better yet, what if he knew all this and decided to keep his audience informed on the action rather than those long stares where the audience ponders whats he is planning to do.  Now switch out Indiana Jones for a guy with no job, no car, no girlfriend, and who is generally considered insane and you have The Movie Hero.  It has all the plot elements you would expect from any action movie, but just because the star, Blake, makes sure they are there because his audience will want them. What makes the movie great is that he very vocal about the fact he is a movie. Some people go along with it and some try to convince him he isn’t in a movie, even though the person watching the movie obvious knows he is right. The concept and the charisma of the main character drive the movie home even when the plot falls into all the tired cliches. Rating: 3.5/5

Ink

I’ve saved the best movie for last and I’m just going to start by saying you should really check this movie out. This movie has a lot of things layered on top on each other and to try and explain half of it would just result in spoilers so I will just keep to the main elements introduced at the beginning.  There is another plane of existence on top of our and in it exists a group of people called Storytellers, who create good dreams for people, and the Incubi, who create bad dreams.  The Storytellers are the good guys and the Incubi are the bad, well as the Storyteller Allel waits for a young girl named Emma to fall asleep so she can make her dream, a monster named Ink shows up. It fights off Allel and the other Storytellers, captures Emma, and dissapears in the land of the Incubi.  In the real world, Emma’s dad is informed that his daughter has gone into a coma by her grandparents.  He lost custody of his daughter and now that she needs him, he won’t come.  The story revolves around the Storytellers trying to get back Emma from Ink while the father deals with his daughter being in the hospital and how he had to lose her once already.  You have plenty of action, some nice comedy, a lot of suspense, some incredible scary villains, all wrapped into one awesome package.  It also features some of the cinematics I have ever seen.  Truly an epic movie. Rating 5/5

Note: All these movies are currently available for viewing from Netflix Instant Viewing.
